The necessity and urgency of the project:

Evgeny Svetlanov – National USSR Artist, Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR and the RSFSR, conductor, composer, pianist, author – a unique creative genius, which heritage was the national treasure of our country. However, both specialists and the general public still does not know all the aspects of his career.

After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory in two specialties – opera and symphonic conducting and composition – he saw his mission as a composer and conductor activity was the tune of his intention to “restore to life unjustly forgotten works, all the Russian classics at first.”

“Talent of Svetlanov as the composer is deep, truly Russian, developing in the traditions of Russian art,” – said composer Yuri Shaporin about his student.

E. Svetlanov, “Now rehearsing his symphony in Stockholm (I never did that before), listening to the recordings of my other compositions, I have come to the conclusion that I have lived the wrong life. God gave me the talent of the composer, and I did not develop, and I think that is a great sin. But this already is not possible to correct, alas … “(Stockholm – Moscow.” Nezavisimaya Gazeta “, the electronic version. No. 164 (1735), 05 September 1998).

Composing activity of Svetlanov was periodic, but full-blown. Despite the close relationship with Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Khachaturian and Rodion Shchedrin, the style of his music is very different from his famous contemporaries: he thought about himself like quite “conservative” and based his music on folk motives and conclusively disarming emotional immediacy.

“My composer activity continues the great tradition of Russian music. And so it may seem today like conservative, but I don’t worry about the future generation: the interest in music of Myaskovsky and Medtner is appeared now. This leads me to believe that my music expects the same fate. I like the vast melodic arch, bright, rich harmonies and the resulting from it polyphonic or vice versa, like in Mahler’s work – he is the favorite composer of my life. On the other hand, the rhythm of my compositions is simple and it is subjected to my compositions’s tunes. In this area I managed to find my own style, it’s a little bit in the manner of Myaskovsky, but without sharp chords like Shostakovich have, and you learn recognize it from the first sounds … ”

From an interview of Evgeny Svetlanov (Repertoire, France. Interviewed by Pascal Brissot).
